9-segmented Cornuproetinae of Morocco

Order Proetida
Family Proetidae
Subfamily Cornuproetinae

A number of cornuproetine genera is characterized by having 9 instead of 10 thorax segments. Whereas Sculptoproetus and Lepidoproetus were described by Erben more than half a centurary ago, Timsaloproetus was recently recognised by Gibb & Chatterton. We added another new genus, Hollandiella, which was first discovered by the late Dieter Holland (hence its name). Many of these species are very small in size (with a notable exception of some species of Lepidoproetus).

Sculptoproetus

Name: Sculptoproetus raki Van Viersen & Lerouge, 2019
Stratigraphy:  'Cyphaspides couche', late Emsian
Locality: Bizmah (Rissani), Morocco

Very small Sculptoproetus with notably large eyes and a fine fingerprint-like sculpture of terrace lines with granules. This species was named after Štěpán Rak from the Museum of the Czech Karst. Notice the similarities to Sculptoproetus africanus, formerly Macroblepharum.

Stratigraphy: Timrhanrhart Formation, Emsian part
Locality: Lansser, Morocco

This species was named after Patrice Lebrun, in recognition of his work on Moroccan trilobites.

Name: Hollandiella verecunda van Viersen & Lerouge, 2019
Stratigraphy: 'Lobopyge couche', Pragian
Locality: Tafraoute, Morocco

Name: Hollandiella curvirostris van Viersen & Lerouge, 2019
Stratigraphy: Ihandar formation, Pragian
Locality: Oued Atchana, Morocco

This is the holotype of the type species of this genus. Hollandiella was recently described as a new cornuproetine genus with 9 thorax segments, in honour of the late Dieter Holland.
