Name: Astycoryphe jorusi van Viersen & Prescher, 2010
Stratigraphy: Hanonet Formation, upper Eifelian
Locality: Resteigne, Belgium
Astycoryphe is a tiny, finely sculptured, thin-shelled tropidocoryphine. Its type species, A. senckenbergiana, comes from the famous "Trilobitenfelder" of Gees, near Gerolstein, Eifel. It is a rare species there with formally just a single complete specimen having been discovered in more than 200 years. In the Ardennes, members of the genus appear to be fairly widely distributed in strata of Eifelian age. They are found in the early Eifelian biostromal Couvin Formation as well as in the silici-clastic deposits of the Jemelle and Hanonet formations. Astycoryphe disappeared here in the upper Eifelian, close to the Givetian boundary.
Astycoryphe jorusi has been found in the abandoned Resteigne quarry but intermittently. We found several specimens in several days. On most days, however, not a single sclerite was discovered.
